Naturally, he'd consider getting stronger AND staying alive as something he needs. He probably saw power as the only way to get what you wanted. He was fighting in the Great Ultra War, and witnessed a temporary successful occupation of the Land of Light. Firstly, it seems that Belial has always wanted power - or more accurately, control - so he can be more certain that he'll be able to protect anyone he wanted. Not sure if this stage show will still be canon after Absolute Conspiracy, but it gives a lot of information on Belial's justification, and highlights some issues with the Land of Light. I'm going to grow a hundred times stronger." When Ken thanks him for saving them, Belial last lines before exiting stage are "Don't misunderstand me. Towards the end, Belial does still help the heroes out, though he makes it clear that his friendship with Ken is severed. He calls out for Belial to "snap out of it", to which Belial declares: " The only thing I can believe in is my own power!"

More poignantly, this makes Ken think Belial's being possessed, power-drunk or hypnotised by Alien Empera. Your current way of thinking will only destroy the Land of Light!" We have to gather more power to defeat what's coming. The enemies are going to keep coming and coming. If we're going to protect anything, we have to extend beyond our limitations. Ken later shows up and challenges Empera "Let's beat this monster together!" but Belial pushes him away with this speech: "We can't keep winning like this. it does give Belial some sort of epiphany, especially when Empera starts offering him some power. He later bumps into Alien Empera, who goes off saying "I sense the darkness in your heart", "You desire to rule the galaxy", yadda yadda. Belial later tells Ken that he's off to learn what's "most important to him", before disappearing. Kinda interesting to note that at this point, Belial isn't set on this conclusion as Ken is set on his own ideology. We would be able to protect anything, anyone, if we did that."

I honestly can't understand people like that." Ken is puzzled by that, so Belial continues by asking him "What's the most important thing to us?" Ken replies: "To protect the weak with a strong heart" (which is pretty dubious in itself), to which Belial says: "I think we should make ourselves stronger, by winning battle after battle. When alone with Ken, Belial said something along the lines of "They are ready to sacrifice themselves to save someone else. More precisely, they travel back to the 1st Alien Empera war. For some extra info on Belial's character - there's a stage show where Zero and Mebius travel back to early Ken and Belial time. Would second this - Belial's descent is quite sad.
